About
Alaadeen Enterprises, Inc.

AEI is a 501c3 non-profit tax exempt organization founded in 1998 by the late Ahmad Alaadeen and Victoria Dunfee to teach the art and aesthetic of jazz in the oral tradition, which Alaadeen experienced in the heyday of Kansas City jazz.  Its mission is to develop an understanding and appreciation of this local jazz tradition with a major focus on education.  Tax deductible donations support the Alaadeen Jazz Master/Apprentice Program.

The Alaadeen Method Of Instruction™

"In jazz music we have more than our share of unsung heroes. For every young man or woman playing this music who goes off to NYC seeking to advance themselves and be on the main stem, there are masters like the late Kansas City tenor man Ahmad Alaadeen (ask Bobby Watson about this cat, he wrote a beautiful tribute) who choose to remain "at home" and enrich their community's culture. Alaadeen's very loving & dedicated wife "Fanny" has recently released this book of his compositions. Don't sleep!"   ...Willard Jenkins, Open Sky
The 2017 Alaadeen Awards of Excellence

Recognizing musicians for merits in both jazz education and performance. Previous recipients include Bobby Watson, Najee, Kevin Mahogany, Clarence Smith, Matt Kane, Harold O’Neal, Seth Lee, Dennis Winslett, Ernest Melton and Hermon Mehari.

Donivan Bailey (Musician, composer, educator)
Posthumous recipient of The Alaadeen Educator of Excellence Award 2017

Every year since Alaadeen’s passing, we have presented The Alaadeen Awards of Excellence to praiseworthy recipients recognizing their merits in both jazz education and jazz performance. This year, it is my honor to posthumously bestow The Alaadeen Educator of Excellence Award upon Donivan Bailey.  Donivan passed last November. He was a native of Kansas City, Kansas.

In addition to leading his own group, he performed and recorded with Kansas City’s most noted musicians including Alaadeen, Bobby Watson, The McFadden Brothers, Kevin Mahogany and The Kansas City Symphony. He was a founding member of measure by measure, the popular a cappella vocal group originally formed in the mid-1990s.

A graduate of Emporia State University, Donivan began private teaching in 2001 teaching not only drums but woodwinds, piano and voice. He held the position of Drumline & Percussion Ensemble Instructor at Shawnee Mission North High School, founder and lead conductor of the Kansas East State Orchestra and a founding charter member of the Kansas City Institute for Jazz Performance and History.

While Donivan enjoyed his career as a working jazz musician, it was his passion for teaching that motivated him to continue working even while in poor health. At his funeral I visited with his coworker and expressed my disbelief that he could teach even as he was dying. His colleague said he could do it because that was what he truly loved to do.
